Female Welfare Officer

Hey!

My name is Kate Wiles, and I'm a first year Natural Scientist. As your welfare officer, I am responsible for your general well-being in and around College. To that end, whether it's representing you to CUSU or having a nice cup of tea with you in my room, I will endeavor to make your life as relaxed as possible! My aims this year are to better sanitation facilities in College, to address female safety in and around Trinity, and to make sure that you know where your resources are! I am also eager to help you or to discuss any personal problems/issues/questions/concerns that you might have! I will be updating the announcements section of this page regularly so check here for upcoming events.

Announcements

  1. I am still looking for people to be on the WoT Committee. If you are interested, please contact me at kw347@cam.ac.uk.
  2. If you believe that there are areas of Cambridge that are poorly lit (Parkers Piece, anyone?), sign the CUSU Right to Light Petition! http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/campaigns/righttolight/
  3. Thank you for voting on the NUS Student Support Referendum. With 91% of students voting yes, this initiative was a huge success!
  4. Sexual Health Week is coming up between the 14th and 21st of February! Make sure you stay safe! Alex Sault is our Trinity Sexpert so feel free to ask her for advice. http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/welfare/sexualhealth/awarenessweek2009.html

Welfare

I will be holding office hours between 2:15 and 3:00 pm on Tuesdays, 11:15 am and noon on Wednesdays, and 4 and 5 pm on Thursdays. Obviously, if these times are not convenient for you, please email me to make an appointment at kw347@cam.ac.uk.

If you are in need of condoms, rape alarms or pregnancy tests, please contact me and I will deposit them in your pigeon hole within the next 24 hours. If you want me to deposit them anonymously, please use the trinitywoman@hotmail.com account with password “confidential” to send your request. The bag with the pink ribbon in my pigeon hole will then be for you. This is, of course, free of charge- courtesy of TCSU. I am working to change the request system so look for an online form in the near future! In addition, soon you may be able to collect items from a TCSU Welfare pigeon hole.

Resources

I know that sometimes it can be difficult to find all the resources for what you need condensed into an easy to access list, so I hope that the information below will help you to find what you need.

And last but certainly not least…

  • The Male/Female/Overseas Welfare Officers

There are also numerous off-site resources for issues ranging from sexual health, mental illness, depression, and eating disorders. Here are some tidbits of information to help you to run your life:

  • All the important numbers you need, from the college nurse to the porters’ lodge to local taxi firms, should be pinned on your bathroom doors, particularly in first year rooms. It is a good idea to keep at least one taxi number in your phone at all times.
  • It is possible to get a dental check-up and hygienist service at the Cambridge Dental Centre for just £15. The number to call to arrange an appointment with them is 01223 332 860
  • If you are sexually active please feel free to make use of the sexual health clinics in the area for students including the Laurel Community Contraception and Sexual Health Service (Tel: 08456 506152) and the clinic at Addenbrookes Hospital (Tel: 245151)
  • The TIMEOUT Art Group is a free art group for all students of the university. It is held in the art room at Kettle's Yard, Castle Hill, Cambridge (Castle Hill is straight across the traffic lights, up from Magdalene College) every Thursday in term time from 1.30-3.30pm. There is no need to sign up for it. The art room is a light airy space where people can use the wide range of art materials provided, in any way they wish, from making a mess to creating a more structured art work, a great way to relax and have fun. It is facilitated by Carol Davies (cd219) an art therapist at the University Counselling Service.
  • The CUSU website has some really useful links and numbers on it if you can’t find what you need here: http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/welfare
  • Some other useful numbers:
    • NHS Direct - For 24 hour health advice and information, call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or online advice at http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk
    • Cambridge County Council Contact Centre 0845 045 5202 (includes Social Care needs)
    • CAMDOC - 01223 464 242

Take care and please let me know if I can help you in any way!

Kate
